Inspect the exterior for rust, chipped paint, and dents

This should be the first used car inspection step you perform before you even unlock the car. Assess every inch of the vehicle for signs of damage, whether from physical impact or deterioration. Give special attention to the rocker panels, undercarriage, and fenders. Any miscolored portions could be from touchup paint that’s hiding rust.

Look under the hood

You may not be a mechanic, but you can still notice when things are obviously awry under the hood. Look for damage to the battery, motor, hoses, and belts. Does anything look broken or rusted? Leaking or soiled fluids are also problematic.

Check the electrical components

Malfunctioning or short-circuited systems can be expensive to fix — and a sign of underlying weather damage. Make sure the exterior light bulbs, dashboard lights, dome lights, sunroof, touch screen, radio, seat adjustments, heaters, windows, and everything else works as it should.

Take a test drive
