Jan 12, 2018. #7. Out to 80 yards a 58 with 140 grains is going to abuse the shooter about as much as it will abuse the deer if ranges are around 80 yards or less. That might be a good load for larger game, but over kill for deer. I've killed deer with a 50 with about 80 grains of 2f and it did just fine.

I bought a Sitting Fox Pennsylvania in .54 cal smoothbore. It was my third kit, the first two were Dixie. They have good quality parts, but the kit needs work, and you must have tools. Mine is iron mounted, single trigger, straight barrel, and I browned everything. It has been very reliable.Looking at their data, there is no doubt that shortening the barrel reduces the muzzle velocity .
