As far as your 45 Seneca, it is not a long range ‘magnum’ muzzleloader. I have a 45 caliber Cherokee and love it as a ‘carrying’ gun. I find it deadly at 50 yards or so, with its zero at 75 yards, my personal maximum maximum range with it. Powder charge max for me is 70 grains of 3F. In my gun.

The rifle I am using for inspiration is #81 shown in RCA vol 1. It is maple stocked but the patch box and carving are very similar to the mahogany stocked rifles. This one is a very good copy, actually put a T/C to shame. It's double pinned, hooked breech, long tang and double set triggers.

Bore size, rare of twist, patching material for round ball, powder type, lube for your bullet/patches. all of these things will affect accuracy and the type of powder you use and the best charge to use.

Jan 12, 2018. #7. Out to 80 yards a 58 with 140 grains is going to abuse the shooter about as much as it will abuse the deer if ranges are around 80 yards or less. That might be a good load for larger game, but over kill for deer. I've killed deer with a 50 with about 80 grains of 2f and it did just fine.

I bought a Sitting Fox Pennsylvania in .54 cal smoothbore. It was my third kit, the first two were Dixie. They have good quality parts, but the kit needs work, and you must have tools. Mine is iron mounted, single trigger, straight barrel, and I browned everything. It has been very reliable.Looking at their data, there is no doubt that shortening the barrel reduces the muzzle velocity .
